Roman Origins and Thermal Springs

Viterbo is home to remnants of 14 Roman bath buildings, with notable springs like Aquae Passeris, Paliano, and Bullicame. These springs were mentioned by famous figures, including Vitruvio and Scribonio Largo, physician to Emperor Tiberio.

Papal Influence

One of Viterbo’s most remarkable thermal structures is the “Il bagno del Papa”, built by Pope Niccolò V in 1450 and later modernized by Pope Pio II. The town’s springs are also referenced seven times in Dante’s Divine Comedy, with a verse carved near the Bullicame spring.

In addition to its thermal baths, Viterbo offers historical and cultural attractions such as the Museo Colle del Duomo and Palazzo dei Priori. Nature lovers can visit the Riserva Naturale Lago di Vico, a UNESCO-recognized site showcasing the beauty of Monti Cimini’s ancient forest.
