Historical Background

1st - 9th Century
Roman and Medieval Origins

Romans and Gauls first discovered Vichy’s springs, founding the town of Aquis Calidis near the Allier River. By the 8th-9th centuries, a primitive thermal establishment operated between two settlements, with a monastery nearby.

17th - 18th Century
Royal Influence

In the 17th century, King Henri IV commissioned Vichy’s first modern baths, starting its tradition as a royal spa town. Princesses Victoire and Adélaïde, daughters of Louis XV, promoted major transformations in 1785, improving roads and thermal facilities. Laetitia Bonaparte, mother of Napoleon I, also visited in 1799, bringing further development.

1850-1870
Napoléon III and the First Golden Era

Under Napoléon III, Vichy entered its First Golden Era. He transformed the town into the "Queen of the Water Cities," developing thermal facilities, hotels, and elegant villas. The Allier riverbanks were redesigned, and the famous Emperor’s cottages were built. By 1862, Vichy’s bottling industry was established, and the population surged with the rise of spa tourism.

1900-1930
Belle Époque and the Second Golden Era

In the early 1900s, Vichy modernized with electric lighting, a tramway, and new thermal techniques, making it the epitome of La vie thermale. The Callou and Lardy Baths were built, and the Opéra opened in 1903, granting Vichy the title of France’s summertime music capital.

Post-WW2
World War II and Aftermath

Vichy’s growth halted during World War II, when it became known as an occupied territory. After the Liberation, the town faced a decline in social thermalism due to changes in the population.

French writer Madame de Sévigné reported to the court of Louis XIV that the Vichy waters has had a beneficial effect on her complexion and hands, thus starting a trend for beauty tretments that continues to today.
