Historical Background

1st Century AD
Roman Origins

Ourense’s origins date back to Roman times, linked to the hot springs and the Minho River, where they built an impressive bridge still standing today. The Romans transformed the As Burgas hot springs into a sacred pilgrimage site. Visitors in the 1st century prayed to the indigenous god Revve Anabaraego for health, and the remains of a sanctuary and Roman bathhouse can still be seen today.

5th - 7th Century
Medieval Era

After the Romans, Ourense became an important city of the Suebi Kingdom during the 5th-7th centuries. Under the bishops, the city expanded as a commercial center focused on wine production, although it suffered attacks from the Moors and Normans.

19th - 20th Century
Modern Revival

The arrival of land transportation in the 19th century and the railway in the 20th century boosted Ourense’s economic activity. Starting in the 1990s, new thermal facilities along the Minho River transformed the city into a popular spa destination, just as it was in Roman times.

Although Middle Ages are usually considered the “Dark Era” of European thermalism, in Ourense the hot springs remained apprecciated and widely used, as they were a valuable help for the pilgrims on their Way to Santiago de Compostela, only 100 km away.

Nowadays, hundreds of pilgrims doing the Way of Saint of Saint James still make a stop in Ourense to rest in their ancient healing hot waters
