In São Pedro do Sul, the former Grande Hotel Lisboa was transformed into the Grande Hotel Thermas. Exotic inspirations and glamour are common themes throughout the project, which offers 153 rooms and aims to give thermalism a more contemporary and even avant-garde approach.
Daruvar’s earliest known settlement dates to the 4th century BC, though archaeological evidence shows the area was inhabited during the Stone Age. The Romans allied with the local Celtic Iasi tribe (“healers”), known for their use of the thermal springs, and built the important Aqua Balissae complex. The baths welcomed notable visitors, including Emperors Hadrian, Commodus, and Constantine the Great, and were dedicated to healing deities.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Croats established villages near the springs. The area later fell under Ottoman rule in the 16th century.
In the 18th century, Count Antun Janković received the land from Queen Maria Theresa and built Daruvar Castle, giving the settlement its modern name. The spa facilities developed over the years, including Antun’s Bath (1772), the Swiss Villa (1860), Arcadia (1870), and the Central Mud Baths (1909), all surrounded by a large spa park.
The Central Mud Bath in Daruvar was built in a Moorish style in 1909, directly over Roman foundations and the hot springs, in the centre of Julije’s Spa Park.
Recently restored to its former glory, the Central Mud Bath, with its octagonal cupula is the symbol of the town.
