Historical Background

1st - 2nd Century AD
Roman Heritage

In Chaves, Portugal, the ruins of Aquae Flaviae—named after Emperor Trajan—and a Roman bridge remind visitors of its Roman past. The ruins, discovered in 2004, include not only the thermal baths, but also a theatre, forum, and temple. The thermal complex is thought to be comparable in size to the baths at Aquae Sulis (modern-day Bath, UK).

16th - 19th Century
Verín and its Waters

Verín, Spain, dates back to the 16th century, but its mineral waters gained popularity in the 19th century. The first buvettes (water pavilions) were established in 1859, including the still-functional Fontenova Spring.

Late 19th - Early 20th Century
Vidago's Royal Legacy

South of Chaves, Vidago became a prestigious thermal destination for the Portuguese royal family between the late 19th century and 1920. The Vidago Palace, now a luxury hotel, and its thermal park are home to an 18-hole golf course. The modern spa was designed by renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.

The “Thermal and Water Route” invites you to explore the six mineral springs and the historic villas of Verín, Chaves and Vidago.

Grab your thermal passport at Eurocity tourist office and start your journey. If you seal it in all the springs you will become an official ambassador of Chaves-Verín healing waters!
