Historical Background - falta

1185 - 19th Century
Early History

Unlike many other continental spa towns, Châtel-Guyon was not founded by Romans. Instead, its history began in 1185 when Count of Auvergne Guy II established the town, which originally focused on wine-growing. The discovery of mineral springs in 1671, analyzed by chemist Duclos, marked the town’s future as a spa destination.

19th Century
Spa Development

The town became well-known in the 18th century, but major growth occurred in the 19th century after the railway arrived in 1855. The first thermal establishments were built in 1817 but expanded in 1858 under the Bosson brothers. In 1878, the Châtel-Guyon Waters Company initiated urban planning, leading to the construction of Avenue des Bains and new spa establishments.

Early 20th Century
Golden Era

By 1912, Châtel-Guyon was officially declared a spa town, and a railway station was built. The town’s golden era saw the construction of the great spa establishments (1908), alongside luxury hotels, a casino, and a theatre, showcasing stunning architecture that blends various artistic styles.

The then Prince of Wales, who was later to become King Edward VII of England, visited Bad Homburg a total of 32 times. On a side note, it was he who popularised the famous “Homburg hat”.
