Royal Attention and Growth

After being labeled a "provincial spa" in 1811, the town’s transformation began with the redevelopment of the Maxbrunnen and the modernization of spa facilities. Under the direction of Ludwig I, renowned architect Friedrich von Gärtner expanded the Kurgarten and infrastructure, leading to Bad Kissingen’s rise as a celebrated spa from 1833.

From the 1830s, Bad Kissingen became a favored destination for European aristocracy, including figures like Otto von Bismarck and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The spa's popularity grew, attracting notable artists and intellectuals such as Theodor Fontane, George Bernard Shaw, and Richard Strauss.

The Wandelhalle has the largest foyer in Europe and is home to the Staatsbad Philharmonie Kissingen who play to spa guests nearly every day.
